Book Event | Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen
Last year The Wife Between Us was the talk of the book world. You could not look anywhere on social media without seeing the beautiful book cover and praise from reviewers and authors alike. After I read The Wife Between Us, I understood and agreed with all the hype. The Wife Between Us was one of my favorite reads of 2018. With a killer twist, captivating characters, and loads of tension The Wife Between Us was a twisted tale of betrayal and a woman who would not back down.
An Anonymous Girl was one of my most anticipated releases of 2019. I could not wait to read what this dynamic duo came up with for their follow up novel. For An Anonymous Girl Hendricks and Pekkanen went in a different direction, telling the story of a girl who gets caught up in a psychotherapists’ web of deceit. An Anonymous Girl lacked the killer twist found in The Wife Between Us, but with an original plot, a relatable character, An Anonymous Girl tells a terrifying story of the danger one can place themselves in when acting out of guilt and desperation.
Whenever I read a book by a writing duo, I am always curious about how the authors found each other. I was lucky because this was one of the first questions Greer and Sarah answered. They met each other through publishing; Greer, an editor and Sarah, already an author. The two became fast friends discovering they had a lot in common; same age, shared love of the same books, and they both have brothers named Robert. At the author event, I could truly feel the connection between Sarah and Greer. Although the event was in a large packed room, I felt like I was in a coffee shop or restaurant talking to two new friends.
During the introductions we learned that Sarah lives in Washington DC and Greer lives in New York City. As if sensing my question of how they manage to write together in separate cities, they began to discuss their writing process. Using video chat and Google Docs they write each and every sentence of their books together. Additionally they are in constant contact via text and email bouncing ideas off of each other. Greer and Sarah also commit to meeting up a few times a month in their respective cities. They shared quite a few humorous anecdotes of their travels between Washington DC and New York City.
The one thing which stood out during the event was the huge amount of respect and love Sarah and Greer have for each other. Greer views Sarah as her sister. Seeing the connection between the pair illustrates why they have had such a successful joint writing career. There was no hint of underlying tension or egos which needed to be stroked. Just two friends embarking on an awesome journey together.
